Obituary of Marie J. Sortino

Marie J. Tomaselli Sortino, of Lodi, formerly of Hackensack, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 3, 2017, at the age of 93 years. She was a parishioner of St. Francis R. C. Church in Hackensack where she served as a Eucharistic Minister, a member of the Choir for 58 years, former member of the Parish Council for Social Concerns, a member of the Secular Franciscan Order for more than 25 years, and a member of the church decorating committee. Marie also volunteered at Hackensack University Medical Center Pastoral Care for 12 years. She was Past President of the Paramus Elks Lodge 2001 Women's Auxiliary and Past President of the Hackensack Middle School P. T. A. She also served as a Girl Scout Leader and Cub Scout Den Mother for Pack 13 for 12 years. Despite a lifelong battle with Rheumatoid Arthritis, Marie painted, crocheted. and created many assorted craft projects to share with her family and friends. She shared her love of baking and taught her beloved caregiver, Nadia, her Italian recipes. Her life was blessed with good friends and caregivers that the family wishes to thank and extend their deep appreciation. You took much love with you and you left much love behind. Beloved wife of the late James Sortino who died in 1994. Devoted mother of Joseph Sortino who died in 2006. Dearest daughter of the late Robert and Rose Tomaselli. Loving sister of Dolores Capp and Michael Tomaselli both of California and the late Dorothy Mellone. Marie is also survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, great, great nieces and nephews, cousins, and many loving friends. The funeral on Monday, May 8th, at 9:15 AM, from the funeral home. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 AM at St. Francis R. C. Church with entombment following at Hackensack Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 4 - 8 PM.
