Obituary of Lillian J. Holmes

Lillian J. Holmes, (nee Walker), of Hackensack, NJ, passed away on Thursday, March 4, 2021, at the age of 81 years. Lillian, known affectionately by her family as Polly. She was the first of 7 children born to Junior and Juanita Walker in Osierfield, GA. In 1944 the family moved to Westchester County, New York. After graduating from Yonkers High School, she began working at Whitlock Hardware store in Yonkers, NY as a customer service representative in a high end sales position. Lillian married her high school sweetheart Quentin (Butch) Hicks. They had two daughters, Ruth and Lillian. Lillian eventually went back to work after and continued her career constantly rising to higher levels in sales. Years later, she met Zabdail Holmes. They eventually married on Sept 4, 1982 and moved to Hackensack, NJ. They shared their love of bowling together on various leagues. Lillian served as Director on the New Jersey State Board for bowling from 2010 to 2021. She loved traveling, especially for bowling. She was also a Columbiette. An honorary life member, Lillian started her membership in 1989 with Holy Trinity Council in Hackensack, NJ. She held various positions such as Past President, Financial secretary and Treasurer. She was looking forward to being the first District Deputy to the newest Columbiette Auxiliary, of Sacred Heart, in Rochelle Park, NJ. Charity was at the forefront of Lillian's mind. She had a heart of gold, her beautiful smile and infectious laughter, gave you no other choice but to love her. She also enjoyed serving as Communion minster, Lector and other organizations for the church and enjoyed serving in any way she could. She also served on the Rosary Society of Queen of Peace in Maywood. She could turn a bad event into something good because of her smile. She enjoyed life and always brought a smile to those around her. She touched so many lives and they touched her. She enjoyed being around her family and friends. She also loved going out to eat with friends and family. Our beloved sister, mother, aunt, godmother, and friend may have had her life suddenly taken, but this is heaven's gain. Her laughter, loving heart, and joyful spirit have left a beacon of light for all who knew her. She had an uncanny ability to find happiness wherever she went because of her loving and pleasant personality. Lillian is predeceased by her parents, brother (Chester) and her husband (Zabdail). She is survived by her daughters, Ruth Jack of Stamford, Ct., and Lillian (Louis) Madison of Yonkers, NY, siblings, Helen Lipscomb of Yonkers, NY, Reginald Walker of Wycoff, NJ, Carol (Tommy) Washington of Ossining, NY, Lorene Roberson of Bronx, NY and Betty (Wilmour) Mahon, of Poughkeepsie, NY, a multitude of nieces, nephews, great nieces & nephews and godchildren, numerous family members and friends all of whom loved her. The Funeral will begin on Monday, March 15, 2021 at 8:45 AM at the G. Thomas Gentile Funeral Home, 397 Union Street, Hackensack, NJ. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 AM at Holy Trinity R.C. Church, 34 Maple Avenue, Hackensack. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Hackensack. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 3:00 - 7:00PM for visitation.
