Obituary of Rosario J. Mannino

ROSARIO J. "RUSS" MANNINO RPh, of Hackensack , died on Thursday April 17, 2008 at the age of 92 years. Russ worked side by side with his wife Vivian at Mira Pharmacy of Hackensack , a family owned pharmacy started by Vivian’s father Charles Mignone and his partner Sid Ramer. They had met in pharmacy school when he was a senior and she a freshmen. They married in December of 1942 and were married for 65 years. A graduate from Rutgers College of Pharmacy in 1937, he led a long and distinguished career as a pharmacist, exercising the highest standards of practice. Serving on the advisory board at Rutgers for three terms, he was chairman of the 12th Annual Rutgers Pharmaceutical Conference. He served as President of the New Jersey Pharmacists Association from 1963-1964 and continued to serve as President Emeritus of the Association. A member of the Association for more than 68 years, he made considerable contributions to the education and training of pharmacy students entering community pharmacy practice. He oversaw the training of more than 25 pharmacy interns in the community pharmacy practice emphasizing community service aspect of pharmacy practice by his example and by his training of the interns. He was honored by the New Jersey Pharmacists Association of the establishment of the Rosario J. Mannino Award for Meritorious Service. He was instrumental in adoption by the NJPhA of its current Code of Ethics for Pharmacists statement. He authored Basic Pharmacy Practice: “Why the Schools Should Never Change, Welcome Trade in Pharmacy.” He was President of the NJPhA Presidents Club providing advice and counsel to the Association based on his extensive managerial and pharmaceutical experience. He also served as President and nearly all officer positions of the Bergen County Pharmaceutical Society and as Chairman of the Scholarship Committee, over twenty five monetary awards have been made to pharmacy students in the tri state area. He was the recipient in 1988 of the Bowl of Hygeia Award which is a national award given to one pharmacist in each state for outstanding achievements in community service by a pharmacist, which was the first recognition of its kind on a national level. He also was the recipient of the Rocco Misurell Memorial Award for his outstanding service to his profession. Since 1981 he served on the Board of Directors and Director of Pharmacy Affairs for Interchem Corporation of Paramus . He was a member of Kappa Psi (Pharmacy Professional Fraternity), the Rutgers Alumni Association, member of the Knights of Columbus Trinity Council #747, Lions Club and a parishioner of Holy Trinity R.C. Church in Hackensack . Beloved husband of the late Vivian J. (nee Mignone) . Devoted father of William Mannino and his wife Hope of Milford, PA and Ronald Mannino and his wife Suzanne of Wyckoff. Cherished Grandfather of Scott and Theresa Mannino, Lisa Mannino and Robert Mannino. Dearest brother of Ange Pellegrino of Bridgewater, NJ, Alfred Mannino of Arizona, Joseph Mannino of South Carolina and the late James Mannino, Frank Mannino and Marie D’Addario Russ is also survived by several nieces and nephews. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrateed on Tuesday, April 22, rat Holy Trinity R.C. Church , 34 Maple Avenue, Hackensack at 10:00 AM with burial following at St. Joseph Cemetery , Hackensack . Visiting will be on Monday from 2 – 4 & 7 - 9 PM. Memorial donations to the Sisters of Charity, P.O. Box 476 , Convent Station, NJ 07961 would be appreciated.
