John was one of the best human beings I have ever known. I met him when I was in my forties, and he seemed like another grandfather to me. We talked about ancient Greek philosophy and about the habits of sorority sisters. He told me about his experiences at Selma and I told him about my experiences at the World Trade Center. If there were one person that I could bring back from the dead to spend some more time with, John would be the one.

Mr. Lydon used to routinely stop in the staff Library at Greystone Park, and that is where we met. Over decades John personally visited, cheered and listened to both patients and staff at the Hospital, as he patiently, persistently, and at times cunningly advocated for their wellbeing. I treasure the talks we shared, especially learning that as a young man he had put his life on the line at Selma to do what was needed and right in our country’s civil rights struggle. Please accept my condolences on the loss of this admirable man who steadfastly worked to make this a better world for the disadvantaged and for everyone.

John Lydon was my teacher at Hackensack High School, 1973. He involved me as one of the original Brightstones, bussing us off to paint wards and host parties for the patients at Greystone. He taught me to serve and help others less fortunate than myself. We crossed paths again when I was surprised and pleased to see he would be my professor at Fairleigh Dickinson. About 30 years later a dapper man in a top hat, long coat and cane appeared at my farm in Sussex County and I recognized him right away. "Mr. Lydon?!" I said and gave him a hug. He remembered me. I said, "Now that we are meeting as adults, can I finally call you by your first name?" And he said I could call him "John Democrat". He and his friend Mr. Colon were two of my favorite teachers who taught me many things I've used in life. My condolences to his family. Know that "Mr. Lydon" positively affected many lives.

Mr John Lydon was my homeroom teacher at Hackensack High School ( Class of 1966). A few years ago he was present at a reunion we had. It was so nice to chat after so many years. He made a profound impact on my life through homeroom as well as History class. He also offer advice on life that have served me well as an adult. I will never forget him. My prayers are with you all during this difficult time. Find solace in his contribution to young people and society. In loving memory.

Everyone that crossed paths with John knew there was something special about him. I met John my senior year of high school. We had heard grandma met a lovely man and he was going to visit. He walked into our lives with his white suits, spats, crisp ties, his gold cane, sense of humor, tall tales, and sense of wonder. I'll never forget the first time he said he was proud of me. I was a bit confused because I had just met him- how are you proud of a stranger? John saw the very best in everyone upon the first introduction. He brought light into ever room, and put a skip in everyone's step. I loved his stories, and he always asked me about my life and successes. He was so colorful and a bit devious sometimes- which made him even more fun.
I spent 8 years of my life knowing John, and i'll never forget those precious times. My heart goes out to his family, friends, students, and loved ones. Mr. Lydon was an exemplary man, a sharp wit, and a tenderhearted comedian who really enjoyed every moment of every day.
Even though he's not biologically my grandfather, I saw him as such. He continues to mean so much to me, and I will remember him through his memory. Thank you, John Lydon for all the talks, laughs, jokes, and love. You are deeply missed. I still carry your 82nd Airborne Paratrooper pin everywhere I go- just as the day you gave it to me.
Lastly i'll reiterate the last things you said to me " I'm proud of you. I love you too... here's your mother." and he handed over the phone.
All my love from Houston Texas,
Nora Bayly
