I am very saddened to hear of John's passing. I owed him a debt of gratitude for helping launch my journalism career. While still in college I worked part time as a desk assistant at the Bergen Record, when John took me under his wing as a mentor. In 1969 I qualified for a summer reporting scholarship provided I could work as a reporter, but management turned me down. John then connected me with Harry Anderson, his former editor at the Newark Evening News. I worked that summer as a general assignment reporter and rewrite man, and then was hired full time until I was let go as part of a strike settlement. Although I lost the job, my experience allowed me to advance my career with other news outlets. I regret I did not stay i touch with John over the years, but I will always remember him as a great writer, editor, and career coach. May his memory be a blessing.

Saddened to hear of John's passing. He was a friend for more than sixty years, from the Bronx where I met him at sandlot baseball, to Fordham where he graduated the same year I did, to parties, telephone calls, visits to our home and his condo, visits to the Browne's when John came.
John always reminded my husband Sal that they had made First Communion together at St. Roch's in the South Bronx. He will always be remembered by us for his loyalty, love of the Bronx, talent in writing, and warm friendship and great since of humor. He will be missed.
