Obituary of Michael J. Sutera

MICHAEL J. SUTERA. of Hackensack . died on Tuesday April 24, 2007, at the age of 85. He was a lifelong resident of Hackensack and a product of the Hackensack School System and the La Salle Extension University, He served in the United States Army during World War II, from 1942 – 1945, He was a successful owner operator of a supermarket and delicatessen with catering services, and was also affiliated with Nojar Realty Investment Corp. Mr. Sutera was active in many organizations and served as president of the Italian American Forum, and District Governor and President of the Hackensack Chapter of Unico National. He was a lifelong parishioner of St. Francis R.C. Church, Hackensack , He served on various civic committees. In 1988 representing Unico, he was chosen to lead the Fallen Firefighters Memorial Committee. He held active membership in Veterans of Foreign Wars, The Knights of Columbus # 747 Hackensack , American Legion, Loyal Order of the Moose, B.P.O.Elks and the Hackensack Troast Athletic Club. Michael received many distinguished Unico Awards including the prestigious Dr. Anthony P. Vastola Gold Metal Award for performing exceptional service above and beyond the call of duty, performing charitable, patriotic and educational needs for their fellow man and showing initiative and originality for such services. Predeceased by his daughter, Francine Vinci, his sister, Pauline Kirkella and a brother, Joseph Sutera, Michael is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Cira (nee Gualemi), his son, Victor Sutera and his wife Diana of Montvale, his son in law, Matty Vinci, of Englewood Cliffs, his grandchildren, Christie Sutera, Matthew Vinci, Gregory Sutera, Lauren Vinci and Michael Vinci, and several nieces and nephews. The Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at St. Francis R. C. Church, 50 Lodi Street, Hackensack on Saturday, April 28th, at 9:45 AM with entombment following at Hackensack Cemetery. Visiting will be on Friday from 2 – 4 and 7 - 9 PM. In lieu of flowers memorial donations to St. Francis R.C. Church 50 Lodi Street, Hackensack , NJ 07601 or the Hackensack Chapter of Unico Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 1527 , South Hackensack , New Jersey 07606 would be appreciated.
