Anne Schaitberger

Obituary of Anne C. Schaitberger

Anne ("Annie") Schaitberger died in God's grace on July 9, 2024. Anne was born on September 13, 1937 in New York City to Margaret (Nee Della Monica) and Thomas Malagiere. In 1957, Annie began her working career at the Hackensack Public Library "Broadway Branch". Annie was mentored by Rebecca Barone and Maureen Taffe as she grew up on the job to become the loving "Mrs. Schaitberger" to generations of kids. Over a 35-year career at the Broadway Branch working with her dear friend Pat Maglio, "Mrs. Schaitberger" lovingly and permanently touched the lives of countless children and families in the largely immigrant working-class First Ward section of the City of Hackensack; an area in which she, herself, grew up. Annie's love and commitment ran the gambit from watching over kids waiting for their parents to pick them up after work to teaching children how to read and write in English. Some just remember "Mrs. Schaitberger" as a role model who always wore a smile and had a kind and encouraging word. Nobody who got to know Annie even a little bit escaped feeling her love. Anne married her loving partner Tom Schaitberger on September 14, 1958. Tom and Anne were married for 65 years. Annie was "Aunt Annie" to many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews and to the nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews of her close friends. Annie loved our Lord Jesus Christ and was particularly devoted in daily prayer to the Blessed Mother. Annie was a proud member of the Children of Mary Society at Saint Francis Church in Hackensack. Annie had a rather lengthy second career as a gift wrap specialist at Bloomingdale's department store in River Side Square Mall. Annie excelled at this because it brought her into contact with so many people with whom she could share her kindness and loving nature day-to-day. Last but not least, Annie was an excellent cook and baker and shared this talent and passion in what appeared effortless preparation of beautiful meals and delicious desserts over her long life. Anne is predeceased by her husband Thomas Schaitberger (died in Christ April 18, 2024), her brother Alfred Malagiere, her late husband Tom's sisters Irene Massey, Moya ("Sissy") Van Steenburgh, MaryAnne O'Malley and Tom's brother Henry Schaitberger as well as brothers-in-law, Thomas Massey, Lester Van Steenburgh, nephew Kevin Massey and niece Marion Massey. Anne is survived by her brother Thomas Malagiere, sister-in-law Mary Malagiere, brother-in-law Eugene O'Malley, sister-in-law Concetta Malagiere and cousin Olivia Pagliaro and her husband Salvatore Pagliaro and a LONG list of nephews, nieces, grandnephews and grandnieces and friends that she loved dearly. Annie was truly superhuman in her capacity to love and care for people. Her loss is bitter to all who knew and loved her. The world is less without Annie and Heaven the better for her entry to be with her beloved Tom. The Funeral will begin on Monday, July 15th, at 8:45 AM at the G. Thomas Gentile Funeral Home, 397 Union Street, Hackensack, NJ. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 AM at Holy Trinity R.C.
