Obituary of Albert D. Carilli
ALBERT DENIS CARILLI, M.D., 82, a resident of Sea Girt, NJ and former resident of Franklin Lakes, NJ died on April 17th, 2012 at Hackensack University Medical Center. He was born in Brooklyn, NY on October 9th, 1929. After graduating as valedictorian of his class at New Utrecht High School, he earned his undergraduate degree with Phi Beta Kappa honors from the City College of New York and his medical degree with Alpha Omega Alpha honors from Georgetown University School of Medicine in 1955. Following his graduation from medical school, Dr. Carilli entered an internship and residency program in Internal Medicine at Bellevue Hospital and Jersey City Medical Center, Seton Hall College of Medicine. Upon completion of his studies, he served as a Captain in the United States Air Force and was the Chief of the Pulmonary Disease Service and Pulmonary Lab at USAF Hospital, Andrews Air Force Base until 1963. In 1963, he began his lifelong affiliation with Hackensack University Medical Center and served there as the Director of Pulmonary Research, Director of the Pulmonary Fellowship program and Associate Director of the Pulmonary and Critical Care Service. Dr. Carilli was passionate about research and teaching, and he served as a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey Medical School, Newark, NJ. He was highly regarded for his research on clinical pulmonary physiology and pulmonary disease, and had numerous publications in such prestigious journals as the New England Journal of Medicine, Chest and the American Review of Respiratory Disease. He was a charter member of the NJ Thoracic Society, and served as its President from 1980-1982. In 1997 he was recognized by the American Lung Association of NJ and presented with the Sir William Osler Humanitarian Award. Dr Carilli was widely beloved by numerous patients and their families as he cared for them for over 45 years. He was regarded by his colleagues as a consummate clinician and diagnostician, and he trained many of the current physicians at Hackensack University Medical Center. Dr. Carilli is predeceased in death by his first wife Joan (nee Dugan) Carilli; and his sisters Gloria Bardusch, Tess Carilli and Nina Alessi. He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Carolyn Carilli; his children Catherine Carilli of Boulder, CO, Albert Carilli and his wife Myra of Wycoff, NJ and Christopher Carilli and his wife Adriana of Socorro, NM; his step-daughters Dr. Lauren Koniaris and her husband Peter of Summit, NJ, and Karin Ajmani and her husband Bob of New York, NY; and his grandchildren Michael, Joseph, Sam, John, Maria, George, Anna, Evan, Rose, Albert, Andrew and Joan. The Funeral on Monday, April 23, at 9:45 AM from the G. Thomas Gentile Funeral Home, 397 Union Street, Hackensack, NJ. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 AM at Holy Trinity R.C. Church, 34 Maple Ave, Hackensack, The family will receive friends for visitation on Sunday from 2 - 4 & 7 - 9 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Albert D.
